How to use There is no fixed dosing regimen for metformin use in managing high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. The dose should be individualized based on individual efficacy and tolerability, without exceeding the maximum recommended daily dose. Maximum dose : 2000 mg daily for adults. How to give: Metformin is usually taken once daily with dinner. Initial dose: Start at a low dose, increasing gradually to minimize gastrointestinal side effects and determine the lowest effective dose for blood sugar control. Dosage for adults: Initial dose : 500 mg once daily with dinner. Dose adjustment : Increase by 500 mg weekly as needed, to a maximum of 2000 mg once daily. If blood sugar control is not achieved with 2000 mg once daily, 1000 mg twice daily may be tried. If higher doses are needed, regular (non-extended-release) metformin may be used at a dose of up to 2550 mg daily, divided into smaller doses. Warnings and precautions Lactic acid risk: Metformin may cause a rare but serious condition known as lactic acidosis, especially if risk factors such as: Impaired kidney function Uncontrolled diabetes Severe infection Liver problems Drought Stop taking metformin and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of lactic acidosis occur , as it can lead to coma.
