Formit XR extended-release tablets contain the active ingredient: metformin hydrochloride, which belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides, used to treat diabetes. It is used to treat type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes when diet and exercise changes have not been enough to control blood glucose. Warnings and precautions Do not take Formit XR if: You are allergic to metformin or any of the other ingredients listed later in this leaflet. Bodies build up in your blood (you may notice that your breath has an unusual fruity odor). You have long-term kidney or liver problems. You have serious complications from diabetes or other serious conditions that have led to rapid weight loss, nausea, vomiting, or dehydration. You have a serious infection or have recently had a serious injury. You have been treated for heart problems, have recently had a heart attack, or have severe circulation problems or breathing difficulties. You drink too much alcohol. You are under 18 years old. Side Effects If you experience any of the following symptoms you should contact your doctor or go to the hospital straight away: Very common side effects (in more than 1 in 10 people) Digestive problems, such as feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting), diarrhoea, bellyache (abdominal pain) and loss of appetite. These side effects most often happen at the beginning of the treatment with Glucophage. It helps if you spread the doses over the day and if you take Glucophage with or straight after a meal.
