Humulin N contains human insulin as the active ingredient, which is used in the treatment of diabetes. You develop diabetes when your pancreas is no longer able to secrete enough insulin to control your blood sugar (blood sugar) level. Humulin N is used for long-term control of your blood sugar level. Its effect is prolonged by including protamine sulfate in the suspension. How to use First, wash your hands. Before you give the injection, clean your skin as instructed. Clean the rubber stopper on the package, do not remove the stopper. Use a clean, sterile syringe and needle to puncture the rubber stopper and withdraw the amount of insulin Humalin 70/30 you need. Your doctor or clinic specialist will tell you how to do this. Do not share your needles and syringes with anyone. Then inject under the skin as you learned. You should not inject directly into a vein. After the injection, leave the needle in the skin for 5 seconds to make sure you get the full dose. You should not rub the area you just injected. Make sure you inject at least 1/2 inch (1 cm) from the place you last injected, and change the places you inject, as you learned. Warnings and precautions Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before using Humulin N. If your blood sugar levels are well controlled with your current insulin treatment, you may not feel the warning signs when your blood sugar drops too low. These warning signs are listed later in this leaflet. You should take care to consider the times you eat your meals, how often you exercise and how much you exercise. You should also keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels by testing your blood glucose regularly. A small number of people who experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) after switching from animal insulin to human insulin have reported that early warning symptoms were less pronounced or different. So if you experience hypoglycemia frequently or have difficulty recognizing symptoms, please discuss this with your doctor. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you should tell your diabetes nurse, doctor or pharmacist.
