The name of the medicine is Inderal. The active ingredient is propranolol. Propranolol is one of a group of drugs called beta blockers. This drug has effects on the heart and blood circulation as well as other parts of the body. Inderal can be used to treat many conditions including hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), some types of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), to protect the heart after a myocardial infarction (heart attack), to prevent migraine, essential tremor, anxiety, some thyroid conditions (such as thyrotoxicosis, which results from an overactive thyroid gland), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickened heart muscle), pheochromocytoma (high blood pressure due to a tumor usually near the kidney) and bleeding in the esophagus caused by high blood pressure in the liver. How to use Always take Inderal exactly as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Your doctor will tell you how many Inderal tablets to take each day depending on your condition. Follow your doctor's instructions on when and how to take the tablets. Please read the label on the package. Warnings and precautions Do not take Inderal: If you are allergic to propranolol or any of the other ingredients listed below. If you have asthma or suffer from an attack of wheezing. Check again with your doctor or pharmacist. If you have uncontrolled heart failure in addition to certain other conditions such as heart block, a very slow or very irregular heartbeat, very low blood pressure, or very poor circulation. If you are fasting or have recently started fasting. If you have untreated pheochromocytoma (high blood pressure caused by a tumor, usually near the kidney) or if you have metabolic acidosis or a special type of chest pain called Prinzmetal's angina. Your doctor will know about these conditions. If you have any of these conditions, be sure to tell your doctor before you start taking Inderal. Side Effects Common side effects that may occur (in 1% or more of patients but less than 10%; between 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 patients) Cold fingers and toes More decreased heart rate Numbness and cramping in the fingers followed by a feeling of heat and pain (Raynaud's phenomenon) Sleep disturbance/nightmares Fatigue Storage Information Keep the medicine out of the reach and sight of children. Drug Interactions Inderal may interfere with the action of some other medicines and some medicines may have an effect on Inderal. Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using or have recently used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Medicines that may cause problems when taken together with Inderal are: Verapamil, diltiazem, nifedipine, nisoldipine, nicardipine, isradipine, lacidipine (used to treat high blood pressure or angina), disopyramide, lidocaine, quinidine, amiodarone or propafenone (for irregular heartbeat), digoxin (for heart failure), adrenaline (a heart stimulant), ibuprofen and indomethacin (for pain and inflammation), ergotamine, dihydroergotamine or rizatriptan (for migraine), chlorpromazine and thioridazine (for some psychiatric disorders), cimetidine (for stomach problems), rifampicin (for tuberculosis), theophylline (for asthma), warfarin (for blood thinning), hydralazine (for high blood pressure). Ingredients Propranolol, carboxymethylcellulose calcium, lactose USNF, carmine according to the British Pharmacopoeia , gelatin , glycerol, lactose , magnesium carbonate, magnesium citrate , methylhydroxypropylcellulose and titanium dioxide. Specifications Inderal is produced as tablets in two different strengths. The tablets contain 10 milligrams (mg) or 40 milligrams (mg) of propranolol hydrochloride.
