Metformin belongs to a class of medicines called pegionides. They work together to control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. This medicine helps improve insulin levels after eating and reduces the amount of sugar the body produces. Type 2 diabetes is also called non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Your doctor has prescribed Janumet XR to help lower your blood sugar, which is too high due to type 2 diabetes and cannot be controlled with diet and exercise alone. Janumet XR helps improve insulin levels after eating and reduce the amount of sugar your body produces. Janumet XR helps your body respond better to the insulin it naturally makes. You should only take Janumet XR on the prescription of your doctor. How to use Take Janumet XR exactly as your doctor has told you. Your doctor will tell you how many Janumet XR tablets to take. Your doctor may need to increase the dose to control your blood sugar. Your doctor may prescribe Janumet XR with a sulfonylurea or insulin (other blood sugar-lowering medications). Take one Janumet XR tablet with your evening meal to reduce the chance of stomach upset. If you are taking Janumet XR, swallow the Janumet XR tablet whole. Do not chew, cut, or crush the tablets. Tell your doctor if you cannot swallow the Janumet XR tablet whole. You may see something that looks like a Janumet XR tablet in your stool. If you see tablets in your stool several times, talk to your doctor. Do not stop taking Janumet XR without talking to your doctor. Continue taking Janumet XR for as long as your doctor prescribes so that it can continue to help control your blood sugar. Warnings and precautions Tell your doctor if you: If you have kidney problems. If you have liver problems. If you have heart problems, including congestive heart failure (when the heart does not pump blood well enough) If you drink alcohol excessively (all the time or binge drinking) If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant If you are a breastfeeding woman If you have a condition that may be associated with dehydration and significant loss of body fluids, such as severe vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, or if you are drinking much less fluid than usual You must undergo surgery. Side Effects In rare cases, metformin, one of the active ingredients in Janumet XR, can cause a serious side effect called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency that can be fatal and must be treated in hospital. Lactic acidosis occurs when lactic acid builds up in the blood. Stop taking Janumet XR if you experience the following symptoms of lactic acidosis: Feel very weak and tired You have unusual muscle pain. You have trouble breathing. You have stomach pain with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. You feel cold, especially in your arms and legs. Feel dizzy You have a slow or irregular heartbeat. Your medical condition changes suddenly.
