Januvia contains the active ingredient sitagliptin, which belongs to a class of medications called DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptide peptidase IV inhibitors). It works to reduce blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. This medicine helps improve insulin levels after eating and reduce the amount of sugar the body produces. Your doctor has prescribed this medicine to help lower your blood sugar, which is too high due to type 2 diabetes. This medicine may be used alone or with other medicines (such as insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or glitazones) that lower blood sugar. You may already be taking these medicines for diabetes along with diet and exercise. How to use Recommended dosage for this medicine: One film-coated tablet 100 mg Once a day Taken orally If you have kidney problems, your doctor may lower your dose (such as 25 mg or 50 mg). This medicine can be taken with or without food and drink. Warnings and precautions Check with your doctor before taking Januvia if you: If you have or have had pancreatic disease (such as pancreatitis). If you have or have had gallstones, alcoholism or high blood triglycerides (a type of fat). These medical conditions can increase your risk of developing pancreatitis. If you have type 1 diabetes. If you have ketoacidosis (a symptom of diabetes and high blood sugar, rapid weight loss, nausea or vomiting). If you have or have had kidney problems If you are allergic to Januvia. Side Effects Stop taking Januvia and see your doctor right away if you notice any of the following symptoms: Severe, persistent abdominal (stomach) pain that may extend to the back area with/or without nausea or feeling sick (vomiting), which may be symptoms of pancreatitis. Drug Interactions You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have recently taken or might take any other medicines. In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking digoxin (a medicine used to treat irregular heartbeats and other heart problems).
