Jardiance contains the active ingredient empagliflozin. Jardiance is a member of a group of medicines called sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors. Type 2 diabetes Jardiance is used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults (aged 18 years and older) that cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. Jardiance can be used without other medicines in patients who cannot take metformin (another diabetes medicine). Jardiance may also be used with other medicines to treat diabetes. These may be medicines taken by mouth or insulin given by injection. Jardiance works by blocking the sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 protein in your kidneys. This causes blood sugar (glucose) to be removed through your urine. In doing so, Jardiance lowers the amount of sugar in your blood. This medicine also helps protect patients with type 2 diabetes from heart disease. It is important that you continue to follow your diet and exercise plan as told by your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. How to use How much should you take? The recommended dose of Jardiance is one 10 mg tablet once daily. If you have type 2 diabetes your doctor will decide whether to increase your dose to 25 mg once daily, if this will help control your blood sugar. Your doctor may limit your dose to 10 mg once daily if you have a kidney problem. Your doctor will prescribe the right strength for you. Do not change your dose unless your doctor tells you to. Take this medicine Swallow the tablet whole, with water. You can take the tablet with or without food. You can take the tablet at any time of the day. However, try to take the tablet at the same time each day. This will help you remember to take it.
