Description

Losec gastro-resistant tablets contain the active ingredient omeprazole. It belongs to a group of medicines called 'proton pump inhibitors'. They work by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. How to use Take this medicine: It is recommended to take the tablets in the morning. You can take the tablets with food or on an empty stomach. Swallow the tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet has an enteric coating that prevents the tablet from being broken down by stomach acids. It is important not to damage the coating. Warnings and precautions Do not take Losec: If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of Losec. If you are allergic to medicines containing other proton pump inhibitors (such as pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole). If you are taking a medicine containing nelfinavir (for HIV infection). If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Losec. Side Effects The following side effects are rare but serious. If you notice any of them, stop taking Losec and contact your doctor immediately : Sudden episodes of wheezing, swelling of the lips, tongue, throat or body, skin rash, fainting or difficulty swallowing (severe allergic reaction). Redness of the skin with blisters or peeling. There may also be severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals. This may be a sign of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. Yellow skin, dark urine, and fatigue may be symptoms of liver problems. Storage Information Keep the medicine out of the reach and sight of children. Do not store above 25°C. Drug Interactions Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines: Ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, or voriconazole (used to treat infections caused by a certain fungus). Digoxin (used to treat heart problems). Diazepam (used to treat anxiety, muscle relaxation, or epilepsy). Phenytoin (used for epilepsy). If you are taking phenytoin, your doctor will monitor you when you start and stop taking Losec. Medicines used to thin the blood, such as warfarin or vitamin K inhibitors. Your doctor may need to monitor you when you start or stop Losec. Rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis) Atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection) Tacrolimus (used in organ transplants) St. John's wort ( Hyphoricum plant ) (used to treat mild depression) Cilostazol (used to treat intermittent claudication) Saquinavir (used to treat HIV infection) Clopidogrel (used to treat blood clots (thrombi)) Erlotinib (used to treat cancer).
