The name of your medicine is MONOZIDE. The active ingredient of MONOZIDE is Hydrochlorothiazide. This belongs to a class of medicines known as "Thiazide Diuretic". MONOZIDE helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention so lowers blood pressure and gets rid of extra salt and water in the body. This medicine used: To treat Fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver or kidney disorders or edema caused by taking steroids or estrogen. To treat high blood pressure (hypertension) How to use Always take MONOZIDE exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. It is important to keep taking MONOZIDE every day. You can take MONOZIDE with or without food. Swallow the tablet with a drink of water. Take MONOZIDE early in the day, it is best to avoid taking this medication within 4 hours of your bedtime to prevent having to get up to urinate. Try to take the tablet at the same time each day. This will help you to remember to take it. Adults: For Edema: The usual adult dosage is 25 mg to 100 mg daily as a single or divided dose. For Control of Hypertension: The usual initial dose in adults is 25 mg daily given as a single dose. The dose may be increased to 50 mg daily, given as a single or two divided doses. Infants and Children: For Diuresis and For Control of Hypertension: The usual pediatric dosage is 0.5 mg to 1 mg per pound (1 to 2 mg/kg) per day in single or two divided doses, not to exceed 37.5 mg per day in infants up to 2 years of age or 100 mg per day in children 2 to 12 years of age. In infants less than 6 months of age, doses up to 1.5 mg per pound (3 mg/kg) per day in two divided doses may be required. Warnings and precautions Do not take MONOZIDE: If you have anuria that means inability to urinate. Hypersensitivity to Hydrochlorothiazide or to other sulfonamide-derived drugs. Take special care with MONOZIDE: If you have high blood sugar (diabetes), this drug may sometimes raise blood sugar. If you have liver disease If you have Kidney disease If you have glaucoma If you have conditions that may cause very low blood pressure include: vomiting, diarrhea, heavy sweating, heart disease, dialysis, a low salt diet. If you older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this drug, especially dizziness If you have gout If you are breast-feeding If you are Pregnant You may get sunburned more easily. Avoid sun, sunlamps and tanning beds. Use sunscreen and wear clothing and eyewear that protects you from the sun. If you experience a decrease in vision or eye pain. These could be symptoms of fluid accumulation in the vascular layer of the eye (choroidal effusion) or an increase of pressure in your eye and can happen within hours to weeks of taking MONOZIDE. This can lead to permanent vision loss, if not treated. If you earlier have had a penicillin or sulfonamide allergy, you can be at higher risk of developing this. If any of the above apply to you, tell your doctor before you take MONOZIDE. Side Effects Like all medicines, MONOZIDE can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some symptoms need emergency medical help: If you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat. If you get any of these, see your doctor immediately Stop using this medication and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as: Eye pain, vision problems Dry mouth, thirst, nausea, vomiting Feeling weak, drowsy, restless or light-headed Fast or uneven heartbeat Muscle pain or weakness Numbness or tingly feeling A red, blistering, peeling skin rash Nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) Less serious side effects may include: Diarrhea Mild stomach pain Constipation Blurred vision. Storage Information Do not store above 30 °C Drug Interactions The effect of the treatment can be influenced if MONOZIDE is taken together with certain other medicines. It may be necessary to change the dose, to take other precautions or in some cases to stop taking one of the medicines. This applies to both prescription and non-prescription medicines, especially: Lithium Digoxin Cholestyramine Steroids (prednisone and others) Other blood pressure medications NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib, diclofenac, meloxicam and others Insulin or oral diabetes medication This medication may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including parathyroid function), possibly causing false test results.
