Mucinex is a product commonly found in medications to relieve symptoms of chest congestion and cough associated with colds, bronchitis and/or other respiratory illnesses. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that works by making phlegm less viscous and increases coughing in some people to expel phlegm. How to use This medicine is intended for adults and children 12 years of age and older. Take this medication as ordered by your doctor. Take this medicine with or without food. Swallow tablets whole. Avoid chewing, breaking or crushing. The usual recommended dose is one or two extended-release tablets every 12 hours. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. For syrup, the usual recommended dosage is 10 - 15 ml 4 times a day. Warnings and precautions Tell your doctor about all of your health conditions, including if you have: If you have a long-term cough due to asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. If you have a cough that produces a lot of mucus. If you have a cough for more than 7 days or if you have other symptoms, call your doctor. Side Effects Possible side effects Stop using this product and seek immediate medical attention if you develop a rash; itching; red, blistered, or peeling skin; tightness in the chest or throat; difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat. The frequency with which these side effects occur is not known.
