Xarelto 20mg 28 Tablets are anticoagulant (blood thinner) medications containing the active ingredient rivaroxaban, used to prevent and treat blood clots in various conditions. Active Ingredient: Each film-coated tablet contains 20 mg of rivaroxaban. Mechanism of Action: Rivaroxaban is a highly selective, direct Factor Xa inhibitor. It works by blocking Factor Xa, a key enzyme in the blood clotting process, which reduces the blood's ability to form clots. This effectively prevents harmful clots from developing or getting bigger. Appearance: The 20mg film-coated tablets are brown-red, round, and biconvex, marked with the BAYER-cross on one side and "20" and a triangle on the other. Manufacturer: Xarelto was developed jointly by Janssen and Bayer, and is marketed outside the U.S. by Bayer plc. Packaging: The product is available in various pack sizes, including blister packs in cartons of 28 tablets. Key Uses Xarelto 20mg tablets are prescribed for adults for several indications: Stroke Prevention: To prevent blood clots in the brain (stroke) and other blood vessels in the body if you have non-valvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat not caused by a heart valve problem). Treatment and Prevention of DVT/PE: To treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT, a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs) and pulmonary embolism (PE, a blood clot in the lungs), and to prevent these blood clots from re-occurring. Prevention after Surgery: To help prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adults who have just had hip or knee replacement surgery. Important Considerations Dosage: Always take the medication exactly as prescribed by a doctor. The typical dose for stroke prevention is one 20mg tablet once daily with food. For treating DVT/PE, the dose is often different for the first few weeks before switching to a maintenance dose. Administration: The tablet must be taken with food to ensure proper absorption. It should be taken at the same time each day for maximum effectiveness. The tablet may be crushed and mixed with a small amount of water or applesauce if needed, but only after consulting a doctor. Side Effects: The most common side effect is an increased risk of bleeding, which can be serious. Other potential side effects include bruising, dizziness, headache, nausea, and stomach pain. Monitoring: Unlike some older anticoagulants like warfarin, routine blood tests (INR) are generally not required to monitor the effect of Xarelto. Contraindications: Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are currently bleeding heavily, have a liver disease that increases your bleeding risk, or are allergic to any of the ingredients.
