Pharmacotherapeutic group: Antibacterial antibioticS belonging to the lincosamide family. (J: Anti-infectives), ATC code: J01FF01. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of certain severe bacterial infections caused by microorganisms susceptible to this antibiotic. This medicine is also indicated for the prevention of infective endocarditis during dental care and upper respiratory tract procedures performed on an outpatient basis in patients allergic to beta lactams (penicillins, cephalosporins). Only use this medicine if you have a medical prescription for it (see Advice/Health education). How to use Adults and elderly patients The recommended dosage of clindamycin ranges from 150 to 450 mg (1 to 3 capsules) every 6 hours, depending on the severity of the infection. Children's dosage This medication is used for children who are able to swallow capsules. The recommended dose for children is between 12 and 25 mg/kg/day of body weight, divided into six hourly doses, depending on the severity of the infection Warnings and precautions Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using clindamycin if: You have or often get diarrhea when taking antibiotics or have ever had stomach or bowel problems. If you have severe, prolonged, or bloody diarrhea while or after using clindamycin, tell your doctor straight away because your treatment may need to be interrupted. This may be a sign of inflammation of the bowel (pseudomembranous colitis) that can occur after antibiotic treatment You have kidney or liver problems. You suffer from asthma, eczema or hay fever. You have any severe skin reactions or hypersensitivity to clindamycin. Side Effects Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience tightness in the throat, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, feel faint, or have difficulty breathing. Stop using the product if you experience hives or itching of the face or body. Storage Information Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use capsules after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister labels. The expiration date refers to the last day of the same month. Store below 25°C. Drug Interactions Tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines: Muscle relaxants used in surgery (neuromuscular blockers). Birth control pills. You must use additional birth control such as condoms while taking clindamycin and for seven days after taking clindamycin. Warfarin or similar medicines - used to thin the blood. You may be more likely to bleed. Your doctor may need to do regular blood tests to check how well your blood is clotting. CYP3A4 or CYP3A5 inducers such as rifampicin may affect the effectiveness of the drug.
